As he left the house, he tossed a whole carton of pressed-wood logs into the fireplace, igniting a blaze that threatened to spread into the room before Unger doused it with water. Someone shouted to Ray, “That’s the last Christmas you’ll ever ruin for us!” That line provided the germ for his story “A Serious Talk.”47
